The Adult Protective Services program was established to receive and investigate reports regarding adults within the state of Indiana who may be endangered and, as appropriate, to coordinate a proper response to protect endangered adults who are victims of abuse, neglect, or exploitation.

APS field investigators operate out of the offices of county prosecutors throughout the state. If the APS unit has reason to believe that an individual who is 18 years or older is an endangered adult, the unit shall investigate the complaint or cause the complaint to be investigated by law enforcement or other agency and make a determination as to whether the individual reported is an endangered adult.

The Child Support Division represents the State of Indiana and is not permitted to act as your attorney; however, we may be able to assist you in the establishment, enforcement, or modification of child support orders.

Circuit Court holds jurisdiction for adult felony cases, criminal cases, adoptions, estates, guardianship, civil collection (civil collections in regards to tax collection), mortgage foreclosure, civil torts, civil plenary, paternity action/dissolution, protective orders, and reciprocal cases.

The Columbus Police Department is a law enforcement agency that is responsible for enforcing laws in the city of Columbus, IN.

Court Services plays an integral role in the delivery of services to probationers as well as holding those probationers accountable for compliance with court orders and supervision rules. Court Services refers clients to outside agencies for services but also provides in-house programming (see Programming and Services). Office visits, urine drug screens, and home visits with searches are an important part of monitoring compliance. Searches are conducted in partnership with the Indiana State Police, Columbus Police Department and/or Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department.

As the head of the city’s executive branch, the mayor’s office maintains six different departments as well as six city offices. The responsibilities of the office include: enforcing city ordinances and state laws; appointing, supervising, and removing heads and employees of city government departments, agencies, and divisions; appointing, supervising, and removing deputy mayors, with appointments subject to City-County Council approval; reviewing and either approving or disapproving, in writing and within 10 days, ordinances or appropriations passed by the City-County Council, with the mayor’s vetoes subject to being overridden by a two-thirds vote of the councilors; communicating and coordinating with the City-County Council and the Marion County Commissioners concerning the financial condition and budget of the city and county; and setting the salaries of city officers and employees, subject to City-County Council approval for salaries of police and fire employees.

Superior Court I is a court of general jurisdiction. Superior Court I hears felony cases for Levels 1 through 6 violations, and some misdemeanor charges in Bartholomew County; additionally, the court hears civil torts aligning with medical malpractice, automobile accidents, and property damage.

Superior Court 2 handles all of Bartholomew County’s misdemeanor criminal cases, traffic cases, small claims and ordinance violations.  Superior Court 2 also handles a variety of felony criminal cases, including most of the level 6 felonies.  In addition, Superior Court 2 handles all types of civil cases.

Offers in-person taxpayer assistance for center for Federal Taxes.

The mission of the Bartholomew County Veteran Services Office is to assist and help veterans and/or their family members. The office assists you in qualifying for benefits by filling out and submitting the appropriate paperwork for compensation and/or pension claims with the Regional Veteran Affairs Office in Indianapolis, Indiana. You will be treated with compassion, dignity and respect in recognition of your sacrifice and service to our nation.

The Bartholomew County Health Department Vital Records is responsible for maintaining and issuing certified copies of vital records, including birth, death, and fetal death certificates for events that occurred in Bartholomew County, IN as well as maintaining records for adoptions, legitimation, and paternity.

Currently, the BCSWMD is responsible for the operation of our 250 ton/day sanitary landfill, our municipal recycling and education center, a rural refuse collection program, a household hazardous waste collection program, a 10 acre municipal composting operation, and the development of a new sanitary landfill site.
